Workshop for Strategic Development of Five Cities of Afghanistan Held in Turkey
Five days’ Workshop on Strategic Development and Framework on Kandahar, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad and Khost cities held in Turkey in the presence of H.E Mohammad Jawad Peikar, Acting Minister of Urban Development and Land – MUDL, Mr. Mohammad Ajmal Ahmadi Acting Minister of Industry and Commerce, Mr. Abdul Baqi Popal the Deputy of the affairs of the Municipalities of the Independent Administration of Local Governance, Deputy of the Ministry of Agriculture Irrigation and Livestock, Representatives of the World Bank, American Sasaki Company and South Korea Urban Research Organization ended.
Moreover, the first day of the workshop consisted of presenting comprehensive report on introduction of Strategic Development Framework, increasing population and expanding cities, driving forces, status of internally displaced citizens in the cities, urban foundation and structures, economic analysis, analysis of resources and environment, governance, government institutions and historical sites and base line report approved for the Strategic Development Framework.
Furthermore, the second day in addition to the assessment, fundamental elements approved for the urban development, approval reports presented for the information and Sasaki company materials and project prioritization approved by the leadership of the Afghanistan Urban Sector.
In addition, the third day of the workshop in addition to the comprehensive dialogues on Urban Structural draft, based on principles the Planning Framework Draft approved.
On this day, the President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan H.E Mohammad Ashraf Ghani took part in the workshop through a video conference. H.E President while stressing on the needs of urban settlement, urban standards, affordable houses, water resources and urban infrastructures further said: the Strategic Development Framework includes the mentioned items as principles.
In the fourth day of the workshop in addition to the debates on the upper cities structural report, comprehensively discussed the National Spatial Strategy.
In the last day of the workshop agreed upon 9 models of capacity building that was prepared by the Sasaki Company for strategic development framework of Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad, Kandahar and Khost.
It is worth mentioning that the Ministry of Urban Development and Land – MUDL in cooperation with Sasaki Company and the World Bank have started the work of strategic development framework of Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Kandahar, Jalalabad and Khost, which will help in eliminating the present issues.
